Halfway between pornography and the world of Japanese animation, hentai offers its followers a multitude of fantasies and sexual practices. But what does this term mean exactly? Who is he talking to? Explanations.

If you’re not into pornography, the word “hentai” might not ring a bell. And yet, it appeals more and more. Hentai speaks to women and men alike, to singles and couples alike. It is full of unusual sexual practices in the world but still sometimes remains unrecognized. So what can you see when you are interested in hentai?

“Hentai”: what is the meaning of this word?

A definition is necessary first: hentai is the abbreviation of “hentai seiyoku”, which means “perversion”, “metamorphosis” or even “transformation” in Japanese. This word in itself has no sexual connotation and does not define a particular gender in its country of origin.

But its long journey to the West gave it a whole new meaning: the word “hentai” is indeed used there to designate manga and animes – Japanese animated series or film – of a pornographic nature.

You will understand, by watching hentai you will only see drawn characters and not humans in the true sense of the term. The very essence of this universe resides here, as well as in its definition. In his 2005 book A Short History of Hentai, sociologist Mark McLelland encompasses

“all sexual acts or motives other than what one might call normal sex” in hentai.

Hentai is actually the opposite of “ecchi”. This term refers to manga or anime that contains sensual and erotic scenes, but more subjective. In other words, you will see nudity there but not pornography, unlike western hentai.

Hentai, for whom and how?

Hentai can be consumed in paper format – available in some bookstores – or video. Like any self-respecting pornographic site, you must be at least 18 years old to view hentai. This universe of “sexual perversion“, in the literal sense of the term, is aimed at an informed public, certain practices being able to be taken to the extreme.

If you want to discover and explore something other than traditional pornography, hentai can be a good way to spice up your sex life. This world in its own right does not close its doors to any sexual orientation: hentai indeed offers a wide choice of heterosexual and homosexual practices and mixes women, men and even hermaphrodite people. To each their own!

Characteristic sexual practices of hentai

Hentai is a set that brings together several sexual practices. If we find rather common acts, ranging from simple sexual intercourse to fellatio or sodomy, many other practices are highlighted. This ranges from bondage (BDSM) to fetishism, including submission, the use of accessories or domination.

Unlike the classic pornographic circuit, often standardized, hentai remains the reflection of the fantasies of its creator. In this way, these self-publications are hardly subject to censorship. Certain practices can therefore surprise and even shock: this is where all the ambiguity of hentai lies, this term representing by definition what is abnormal or even disturbing.

Hentai: science fiction, magical universe… What are the themes?

The classic codes of manga are found in hentai. There are even sexual parodies of some very famous characters: they are called “doujins”. But the limits of hentai don’t end there. It is actually a condensed universe: it goes from the fantastic to the medieval, through the demonic, mythology or science fiction.

Hentai therefore gives free rein to the imagination. Many themes such as cosplay – the practice of playing a manga character – or divination are discussed and no fantasy is left behind. While hentai can sometimes be described as unhealthy or even violent, most manga or anime is limited to classic sex.

So, after having explored pornographic films, listened carefully to naughty podcasts or devoured erotic news, why not indulge in hentai?

Disclaimer: Certain hentai practices may offend the sensitivity of an unsuspecting audience. They can be considered as abuses and therefore be prohibited and punished by law.
